Kikar Hamedina – Nation Square – is the largest square in Tel Aviv, and is a neighborhood in itself: bourgeois, residential and traditional, it is located in the northeast of the city. With its side streets, such as Moshe Sharett, Jabotinski and Weitzman Street, the Kikar Hamedina neighborhood is mainly inhabited by wealthy families looking for peace and quiet. With its luxury apartments and private villas, this area exudes a pastoral atmosphere, where many great men have lived, such as former Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir.
Famous for being one of the luxury shopping havens frequented by both tourists and the top decile of Israelis, because it is on this square that the big names of Haute Couture have chosen to settle: . Christian Dior, Gucci, Versace, Zadig & Voltaire and Prada have all taken up residence here.
On the cultural side, this district also benefits from the presence of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Israel Opera, both of which are just a few minutes away.
An eventful history
It was in 1942 that twenty different landowners bought the land of Kikar Ha Medina, divided into 54 plots, from the organization “SHIKUM AMAMI” (People’s Rehabilitation). The original plan was to build within the square itself, but no project has been able to materialize since it was acquired nearly 80 years ago, to the consternation of landowners and the satisfaction of most residents of the area.
Designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, in collaboration with Israeli architects Israel Lotan and Abba Elhanani, Kikar Hamedina Square is encircled by Hey Behar Street, a name rich in history since it signifies the date of the proclamation of the creation of the State of Israel by David Ben
It wasn’t until the early 1970s that uniform residential buildings were built around the square, as well as shops on the ground floor, making it one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Tel Aviv.
