An eventful history

It was in 1942 that twenty different landowners bought the land of Kikar Ha Medina, divided into 54 plots, from the organization “SHIKUM AMAMI” (People’s Rehabilitation). The original plan was to build within the square itself, but no project has been able to materialize since it was acquired nearly 80 years ago, to the consternation of landowners and  the satisfaction of most residents of the area.

Designed  by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, in  collaboration with Israeli architects  Israel Lotan and Abba Elhanani,  Kikar Hamedina Square is encircled by Hey Behar Street, a name rich in history since it signifies the date of the proclamation of the creation of the State of Israel by David Ben

It wasn’t until  the early 1970s that uniform residential buildings were built around the square, as well as shops on the ground floor, making it one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Tel Aviv.
